So, what’s the big deal with tutoring and assessing?

I have been delivering tutoring and assessing training for nearly twenty years and always learn something new from delivery. Is it any different to coaching? Well no not really but it’s the application of your delivery philosophy that is critical. I don’t see the principles of being a coach being different to how you apply the delivery or tutoring or assessing and more importantly how I work with people and how I conduct my life. For me if your philosophy is about being people-focused then why should that be any different to delivering as a tutor or assessor?

Being you, authentic, and developmental is critical to my philosophy of being a teacher, coach, tutor, assessor or manager in the workplace.

So, why become a tutor and assessor?

I believe it’s a natural progression of coaches' CPD. As it takes you to the next level and most importantly you learn massively from the coaches you are working with, young people have great new ideas for effectively engaging people - my principle of C.A.S.A applies here, oh yes, it's a case of copying and stealing everything! Meaning not the chairs and tables but the techniques and delivery approaches. Think about how you developed your style. Observing others and taking what you liked, well that’s C.A.S.E. in action.

What I also like is not only awakening people but also giving a range of little models that people can take away and jog their memory.

One I developed which we go in-depth into is:

        Plan for delivery

        Align Structure to learner needs

        Communicate effectively

        Engage through Facilitation

        Review activity and learning

But one I learnt only last month was a nice one I felt was this one which makes people the focus and then the acronym follows naturally:

        Person-centred

        Empowering

        Organised

        Positive

        Learning

        Engaging

So loads of learning and challenging perception of how people learn, are their things called learning styles or preferences, or is it how we engage and deliver? Now that is a webinar in itself!

The joy of autonomous delivery is fantastic and reaching that state in sporting performance as a tutor is a great feeling. However, be aware working abroad is so different. When working for International Basketball I have really been challenged about my subconscious views of other cultures. Some parts of the world are challenged by our “Western” approach to learning and facilitation when brought up in a more dictatorial education system. Others find challenging poor delivery very difficult. But as they say, every day is a school day so loads of learning and evolutional change.

So developing into a tutor and assessor is not my approach, for me, it's adding another string to your bow of audiences to which you can deliver and positively make a difference.

We have a range of courses in our Education Suite and are always keen to discuss how these can be relevant to you. We also offer ongoing CPD and community of practice which is always a learning experience.
