The Level 4 Sports Coach apprenticeship is aimed at any advanced coach working in a school sport, community sport or high performance sport environment. The standard will support coaches to use extensive technical and tactical sports knowledge and skills to design and deliver coaching programmes that engage, motivate and evolve participants’ skills and performance.

The Level 4 Sports Coach standard is an 18 month apprenticeship where learners will be supported to improve all areas of their coaching practice, including; developing their own coaching philosophy, designing and implementing effective coaching programmes, promoting holistic wellbeing within coaching programmes and creating positive environments to facilitate learning and skill acquisition. We offer this apprenticeship standard in the three pathways, each including additional knowledge, skills and behaviours specific to the different environments; School Sport Coaches, Community Sport Coaches and High Performance Sport Coaches.

We have extensive experience working in the sports sector and utilise tutors with specialisms in each environment to teach this standard. Learning modules are mainly delivered at an employer’s workplace or another suitable venue and often as a group. Apprentices are given resources to support them through the apprenticeship and additional e-learning modules are included in the delivery plan to enhance a learner’s knowledge and understanding.

Apprentices must be employed for the duration of the apprenticeship and work at least 30 hours per week for their employer with 20 per cent of their time allocated to ‘off the job’ training. The apprentices will be assessed via an end point assessment which includes a work-based project with presentation and questions, a practical coaching observation with questioning and a professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence to ensure they have gained the required knowledge, skills and behaviours to achieve the community activator coach standard.

As a minimum, we would expect candidates applying for this apprenticeship to already hold a L2 NGB Coaching Qualification and have at least 12 months of independent coaching experience.
