Summary

We supported British Shooting in their proposal and submission to Sport England for funding for 2017-2021 as we supported them developing and writing their Sport England core market funding submission. We were delighted that the funding submission was a success with a 4% increase in funding. We were asked for further support in preparation for the 4-year cycle and in particular with British Shooting commercial strategy.

Approach

In our initial support we provided facilitation of workshops with British Shooting to identify the contribution towards the DCMS and Sport England’s outcomes and in doing so identify the strategic priorities to include in the primary proposal to Sport England. We reviewed the evidence and insight to enable effective decision making and justification of the funding case. Following this our Senior Business Development Manager for Sport Business established a framework for the commercial development of British Shooting assets as part of the funding submission. Subsequently we (Rebecca) have had continual dialogue with the National Development Manager and recently spent a day with the Engagement Team to help shape the commercial strategy and implementation plan. This involved guiding the team through a process of considering the audience, market segmentation and route to market as well as product development through a marketing mix approach.

Outcome

For the initial outcome, we presented the emerging approaches as part of a scoping meeting, making amendments to the proposal and creating relevant strategic, operational, and business plans for the basis of the funding submission to Sport England. The following work so far has aided British Shooting to sharpen their thinking, provided focus for the delivery officer, and created a plan of action. There was an outcome achieved around the personal and professional development of the key member of staff responsible for commercially developing British Shooting events. We will continue to support in reviewing their implementation plan.

Impact

The project facilitated British Shooting to retain Sport England funding, our support was essential to bring a focus on the growing participation and development of the talent pathways. Our recommendations were taken on board such as to enable a greater participant reach. This led to the targeting participation of under representative groups. These groups include individuals with disabilities, young people, women, and girls. In addition, our work led to diversity in the leadership team with our involvement leading to indirect benefits for British shooting as they formed partnerships with disability sports and the Change foundation. Ultimately, our involvement has had a positive long-lasting impact on British Shooting.
