Education & Training

The Boccia Leaders Award has been developed by Boccia England to provide an introduction to coaching and officiating in the sport of Boccia.  It is available to organise for groups of learners.

What will you cover on the course?

The Boccia Leaders Award provides learners with the fundamental skills and knowledge required to introduce and deliver boccia within the community.  Learners will gain an understanding of both officiating and coaching boccia, including an overview of the rules of Boccia, adapting and designing boccia activities, leadership, plus disability awareness and classification.

Who is the course for?

This is an introductory level course and is therefore suitable for individuals with little or no prior knowledge of boccia.  It is also ideal for those volunteering at boccia clubs who are looking to refresh and confirm their knowledge.  The course is suitable for school students, teachers, community workers, leaders and players.

What is the value of this course?

Boccia is an inclusive, tactical and exciting sport which can be adapted to suit any audience or community setting.  Learners will gain leadership skills and knowledge of how to adapt activities to make them inclusive.

Learner eligibility

Learners must be at least 12 years old (learners under the age of 18 must have a responsible adult present for the duration of the course).

Learners should be able to communicate effectively in English.

There is no formal assessment as part of this course.  Informal assessment takes place to ensure learners are supported and encouraged throughout the course.  Learners will receive an e-certificate on completion of the course.

Format / duration

This course is delivered face-to-face and lasts for three hours.

Progression opportunities

This course provides learners with the skills and knowledge of Boccia required to enable progression to the Boccia England coaching or officiating course pathways.  Learners also have the opportunity to upgrade their certificate after the course by evidencing volunteering hours to receive either a bronze, silver or gold leadership certificate.

What do learners receive as part of the course?

Learners will receive a hard copy resource and a certificate on completion of the course.

What are the minimum / maximum numbers to run a course?

This course requires a minimum of 14 learners and a maximum of 18 learners.

If you are unable to meet the minimum number of learners, we recommend speaking to local organisations to see if they have anyone who would like to join your course.

We could also look at charging more per learner to ensure the course costs are covered to enable the course to run with fewer learners.

What facilities are required for the course?

Before submitting a course request form, please ensure your venue meets the following requirements:

  • A total of 4.5 hours facility hire to enable the tutor to start setting up 1 hour prior to the course start time, plus 30 minutes set down time after the course.
  • Suitable lighting and heating conditions for learner comfort.
  • A minimum space equivalent to two badminton courts for the practical element of the course, plus either a classroom or additional space equivalent to two badminton courts (four courts in total) to allow the their and practical to be delivered in the same space.
  • Sole use of the space to minimise noise disruption from other activities, e.g. in larger sports halls.
  • A projector/TV screen and cables, chairs and two tables.
  • Disabled access.

What is the cost of organising a course?

This course costs £25 per learner.

This includes tutor travel up to a 55-mile round trip.  Any additional travel costs will be payable by the course organiser at 45p/mile.
