We were contracted by the partnership of the National Federation of Anglers, the Salmon and Trout association and the National Federation of Sea Anglers to undertake a review of their collective and individual governance structures and the potential for moving forward together as a collective. In addition, we requested to review the potential to collect data across the three bodies and identify the common ground and interest between them. The three bodies are significantly different in culture and nature of the membership....

We undertook extensive consultation with the membership bodies of the three organisations and the national committees driving each of the bodies. We recognised the need for the continuation of the three bodies separately, but some common ground needed to be established in relation to equitable practice, coaching and instruction in order to support an increase in participants across the board....

We proposed the formation of the Angling Development Board with a view of moving it to a trust long term. Following consultation with Sport England this was viewed as the best mode of funding into Angling nationally. A development board was formed with the objective of developing coaching education training and action towards under-represented groups and consistent joint working around addressing participation. This governance project led to further work in this area; bringing together partners within the same sport as well as improving the quality of governance within national sports organisations themselves....

The key takeaway from this project for us what that sports with a number of governing bodies can work together if a common ground and purpose is identified, whilst keeping their traditions and identities intact. As a result of our work on this project this led to us being seen as an organisation that can support small and medium sized governing bodies in governance change, future clients included EMDP and BAFA....
