The Introduction to Basketball Teaching workshops have been developed to provide learners with the confidence to deliver engaging basketball sessions in a primary or secondary school environment. The workshops are ideal for teachers, individuals on a PGCE pathway and teaching assistants with little or no basketball teaching experience. The workshops are delivered using a game-based approach and are underpinned by the principles of the Basketball England Player Development Framework.  

Introduction to Teaching Basketball Primary

Duration: 3 hours

Outcomes: By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the basic rules of the game
  • Understand how to deliver engaging basketball through the National Curriculum using a game-based approach
  • Plan basketball activities based on basic attacking and defending principles 
  • Have an awareness of the Basketball England Player Development Framework and the Slam Jam Programme for children aged 7-11 years old.
  • Explore solutions to common challenges when teaching basketball in a school environment

Introduction to Teaching Basketball Secondary

Duration: 4 hours

Outcomes: By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the basic rules of the game
  • Understand how to deliver engaging basketball through the National Curriculum through a game-based approach
  • Plan basketball activities based on basic attacking and defending strategies
  • Have an awareness of the Basketball England Player Development Framework and its application into secondary school teaching.
  • Explore solutions to common challenges when coaching in a school environment

Learner eligibility

Learners must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a teacher, on a PGCE pathway or teaching assistant.
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing).

If learners have experience of working in a primary education environment but don’t meet bullet point #2, please contact us so we can confirm your suitability.

What facilities do I need to deliver a workshop?

A sports hall is needed to run the workshop which has at least 2 baskets. 

How many learners do I need to run a workshop?

For both primary and secondary workshops, there needs to be a minimum of 10 learners. The maximum number of learners is 20.

What are the fees for hosting a workshop?

We charge a set fee for hosting a workshop. The Introduction to Teaching Basketball Primary workshop is £425 (three hours) and the Introduction to Teaching Basketball Secondary workshop is £475 for a four hour workshop.
