Course description

The 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching (Sport & Physical Activity) focuses on the skills and competences required to be able to assist the delivery of sports or physical activity coaching sessions under the direct supervision of a more qualified coach. Coaching topics include:

  • Roles and responsibilities of the coaching assistant
  • Rules and regulations
  • Safe coaching practice
  • Inclusive coaching practice
  • Deliver and evaluate coaching activities
  • Technical requirements of sport and physical activity.

 

Who is the course for?

The qualification is designed for those who wish to become involved in coaching at an assistant level, and to have responsibility for the delivery of coaching activities under the direct supervision of a more qualified coach.

This course is approved by the UK Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association (UKBJJA) as the first step on the coaching pathway for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

What’s the value of this course?

This qualification is ideal for learners who are seeking an entry point to coaching and are looking at supporting a more qualified coach.

Learners may gain opportunities as an assistant coach. The qualification is also recognised as the industry standard level 1 qualification for coaches by UK Coaching and maps to the CIMSPA professional standard of Assistant Coach

Learner eligibility

Prior to registration learners are required to:

  • Be appropriately identified
  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Hold a minimum of a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
  • Be a member of UKBJJA
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking reading and writing)
  • Have access to a laptop and good WiFi to complete the e-learning modules. Any special learning requirements must be made clear at the registration process

Learners are also encouraged to complete a safeguarding workshop prior to working with athletes under the age of 18.

Format, duration and cost

The course will be delivered through remote e-learning and uses Google Classrooms to host learner portfolios. Learners will be required to:

  • Complete a series of e-learning modules and associated tasks within their 1st4sport qualification learner portfolio (approximately 6 hours of e-learning which excludes portfolio tasks).
  • Deliver a practical coaching session which is videoed and uploaded to Google Classrooms to be reviewed by an assessor.

Registration with 1st4sport is valid for a 1-year period.  Learners should therefore aim to complete the course within 1 year.  

The cost is £275 per person. 

Please note that should a learner wish to complete their course after the 1 year period has elapsed, additional fees are applicable.  Please contact us as soon as possible if you think you will not be able to complete the course within the registration period.

Progression

After gaining experience as an assistant coach, learners are able to progress to a Level 2 Coaching qualification if they have a minimum of a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

The skills and knowledge developed through this qualification may also be used to progress to other industry-relevant qualifications in coaching sport, activity leadership or sports development.

Booking

To start the course, please complete the below booking form and submit payment.  Please ensure you have read our terms and conditions before booking.

Once Sport Structures have received your booking and payment, you will be contacted regarding providing copies of your prerequisite evidence.  If you would like to send a copy of photo ID and the certificate confirming your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu belt colour straight away, please attach them to an email and send to education@sportstructures.com.

After we have checked your prerequisite evidence, we will send you details of how to access the e-learning so that you are able to start your course.

Please note, any delays in sending pre-requisite evidence will delay access to the course.  Our working hours are as follows:

  • Monday - Thursday: 9am - 5pm
  • Friday: 8.30am - 4.30pm
  • Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays: closed
