Have you ever wondered what makes volunteers so special, or perhaps what drives volunteers to give up their time, skills, and energy to go above and beyond, often with no expectation of reward or recognition?

Perhaps it’s the deep-rooted desire to make a difference, to create positive change in communities and in the lives of those involved, or maybe the thrill and fulfilment that comes from helping others and seeing the impact of their action first-hand.

Volunteers Week, taking place as always between 1st and 7th June, is not only a time to celebrate and appreciate the unwavering commitment and huge value these unsung heroes bring to society, but a time to explore these questions and delve into the roles of these remarkable individuals who light up our communities and shed light on an excellent resource that champions the value of volunteers and ensures they receive the support they deserve; Sport England’s Club Matters offer

It's all well and good celebrating and thanking volunteers, and rightly so, but often what volunteers need is support in developing their skills and knowledge to help their community sports club or organisation to grow. That’s where Club Matters fits in, a free initiative that provides volunteers with the tools and support they need to succeed in their role which helps sports clubs develop and succeed. By offering a range of free resources, tools, training and an opportunity to network with and learn from other volunteers, Club Matters empowers volunteers within community sports clubs and organisations to enhance their skills and knowledge in areas such as governance, finance, marketing, and planning, to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

Since Volunteers Week 2022, Club Matters has made significant strides in supporting volunteers. Our Club Matters team have delivered over 140 learning opportunities for community club and organisation volunteers and the professional workforce who support them.  These learning opportunities have engaged over 1200 participants who are eager to improve their community clubs and organisations. The remarkable satisfaction score of 91% demonstrates the impact and success of these free learning opportunities in meeting the needs of volunteers in community clubs and organisations.

Our ‘workshop of the month’ for June 2023 to coincide with ‘Volunteers Week’ is the popular ‘Volunteer Experience’ workshop – we’ve even squeezed an extra date in on June 7th at 7pm so there’s no excuse to miss out.  The learning opportunity is open to all volunteers across England who give up their time in any capacity to support community sport and physical activity to take place.  By attending the ‘Volunteer Experience’ learning opportunity you will:

  • Understand how to inspire a positive volunteer culture at your club or organisation,

  • Identify how to develop the volunteer's experience

  • Identify top tips in recruiting, retaining and rewarding volunteers

  • Gain the knowledge to develop an action plan to improve your club or organisation’s volunteer experience
