Summary:

Development of a Sport and Physical Activity Development Plan for the Selly Oak District of Birmingham which has a population of over 100,000 people.

Approach:

Sport Structures, using a facilitative – consultative approach with the Selly Oak District and its key partners, carried out two audits:

  1. Sports Development Audit – distributed to SDO’s of Selly Oak
  2. Facility Audit – distributed to all sports and physical activity facility providers within Selly Oak

This first strand of research looked at context and demographics, funding streams, club details, league details, coaching programme detail, qualitative data, conditions of facilities and sport specific provision. The second strand involved reviewing and collating all strategic documents relevant to the development of the final plan.

On the basis of the audit Sport Structures worked with the District team and broader sports and physical activity network to shape and agree a Sport and Physical Activity plan for the District related to the Sport and Physical Activity strategy of the City, Sport England West Midlands regional strategy “Sign up for Sport” and other strategic documentation including Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, City Council’s play and Health strategies.

Outcome:

Provided the Selly Oak district of Birmingham with a Sport and Physical Activity Action plan with a four year framework to increase opportunities for the people of Selly Oak District to participate in sport and physical activity.
