What have we been up to lately?
It's been a busy few months at Sport Structures, and we wanted to share a quick round-up of the exciting projects we've been working on across inclusion, participation, and system change in sport. This roundup highlights key achievements, from empowering organisations to be more inclusive to developing new programmes based on real-world insights.
Moving to Inclusion – Making Inclusion Real, Not Just a Buzzword
We’ve been supporting the rollout of the Moving to Inclusion (M2I) framework – a sector-wide push (backed by the Sports Councils) to help organisations take practical steps towards becoming more inclusive.
From mentoring partners and hosting Celebrating Inclusion events, to shaping online resources and managing the overall programme, we’ve been right in the middle of it all. Over 76 organisations have now used the M2I diagnostic tool, with some clear insights emerging – especially around leadership, communication, and culture. There’s still work to do, but the momentum is building!
BAFA – Building Inclusive American Football
We've supported the British American Football Association with a review of their disability programme – and what a story! From grassroots wheelchair football to international recognition (including Nickelodeon features and the 2027 Invictus Games), there’s a lot to be proud of.
Our review gave them a clear roadmap for growing their disability offer – including launching walking American football, developing disability-specific coaching courses, and embedding inclusion across roles from players to volunteers. This work has laid strong foundations for real, lasting change in the sport.
Dartford Athletics – A Track to the Future
Dartford Borough Council asked us to help them make the case for investing in their athletics facility – but not just bricks and mortar. They wanted to know how they could create a more inclusive, community-driven model.
We reviewed how the two clubs were working together and recommended merging into a single, well-governed organisation. Our advice is helping the Council, clubs, and England Athletics plan for investment and future growth – making sure the facility really serves local people.
England Squash – Listening to Girls
We led a national review for England Squash to find out why so few girls are sticking with the sport. The answer? Girls want fun, friendships, confidence, and variety – but they often feel judged or overlooked.
We ran surveys, spoke to families, and held focus groups with girls aged 8–16. The result? A powerful set of insights that will shape a brand-new girls’ programme, designed around their real needs. Less pressure, more play – and coaches who get it.
PESSPA – Boosting School Sport
We’ve been planning our school sport training offer for the next academic year, including:
- A brand-new set of 90-minute CPD workshops on things like inclusion, physical literacy, and working with girls
We’re also building partnerships with schools, private providers, universities, and Active Partnerships to grow this offer – so that more staff in schools are supported to deliver great PE and sport for all children.
What’s next?
We’ve got more exciting work coming up, including:
- Deepening support through M2I mentoring and resources
- Supporting more NGBs and local authorities to embed inclusion in action
- Rolling out our new school sport training calendar
- Continuing to listen to the voices of those often left out of sport – and turning insight into action.
