
Sport Structures - Sport Education and Training


This course will support learners to develop the knowledge and skills required to lead their own coaching sessions within their own environment. The course will cover the following topics:
- Developing your role as a coach
- Developing your coaching practice
- Understanding the individuals you coach
- Managing relationships
- Developing the coaching environment
- Protecting self and others
- Planning progressive coaching sessions
- Delivering progressive coaching sessions
- Reviewing progressive coaching sessions
Learners will also be required to complete a UK Coaching Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop to meet certain elements of the course assessment criteria. The price of the workshop is not included in the price of the Level 2 Certificate in Coaching as learners may already have completed the workshop prior to signing up for the course.
The course is recognised as an industry-standard Level 2 course and maps to the CIMSPA professional standard for coaches.
The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching (Sport & Physical Activity) is endorsed by the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) as part of their recognised coaching qualification pathway.
Successful completion of the course will enable learners to begin coaching independently, i.e. without needing the supervision of a Level 2 Coach. This may be in either a paid or voluntary role.
Prior to registration with the Awarding Organisation, learners must:
- Be appropriately identified (produce photo ID)
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be a member of the Hurlingham Polo Association
- Be able to communicate effectively in English (written and verbal)
- Hold or have held a handicap of at least 0
- Be part of a coaching environment, working with a current HPA licensed coach
- Have access to a computer and good WIFI to complete e-Learning, assessment tasks and attend virtual classroom sessions.
Learners will be required to:
- Complete online learning via the Sport Structures e-Learning platform
- Completion of associated portfolio tasks
- Attend two virtual classroom sessions
- Attend a UK Coaching Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop (This applies to learners without a valid certificate only. Certificates are valid for three years)
- Attend a face-to-face assessment day which covers:
- Completion of course portfolios
- Delivery of a coaching session
- Professional discussion on safeguarding
- Riding test
The next course will be held on the following dates:
- Monday 28th July - Virtual session 1
- Monday 18th August - Virtual session 2
- Monday 1st September - Deadline to complete portfolio 1 and upload both photo ID and a valid safeguarding certificate.
- Monday 15th September 2025 - Face-to-face session (Venue TBC)
- Monday 6th October 2025 - Final assessment day (Venue TBC)
All elements of the course must be attended.

Learners will be assessed via:
- Written tasks via Google Classrooms
- Delivery of a coaching session
- Professional discussion regarding safeguarding
- Riding test
All of the above assessment elements must be successfully completed before a learner can be certificated. If learners miss any parts of the course, they may incur extra fees to enable assessment to be carried out at a different time.
Learners must pass all elements of the course in order to be certificated. On successful completion of the course, learners will be awarded two certificates, one for the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in coaching (regulated) and a second certificate in Sport and Physical Activity (non-regulated).
Learners have a maximum of two years to complete and be certificated for this course. The format of this course has been agreed with the HPA to support learners to complete the course well within the registration period.
Please note that learner access to the e-learning platform is only valid for 12 months from the date the platform is first accessed. If you need access after this date there will be an additional charge.

After gaining experience as a Level 2 coach, learners may wish to develop their knowledge further with other qualifications, such as:
- A sport-specific coaching course
- Level 3 Certificate in Coaching (Sport & Physical Activity)
