Ready to Start an Apprenticeship? Here's How to Talk to Your Employer

You’ve found an apprenticeship that feels right for you, now it’s time to get your employer on board.

At Sport Structures, we work with individuals who want to take the next step in their career through high-quality, work-based training. Whether you're working in sport, education, or the community sector, an apprenticeship can help you grow your skills, take on more responsibility, and make a bigger impact in your role.

But first, you’ll need your employer’s support.

What You’ll Need to Do

1. Have a conversation with your manager
Let them know you’re interested in starting an apprenticeship and explain why. You might want to focus on:
  • How the apprenticeship will help you perform better in your current role
  • The new skills and knowledge you’ll gain
  • How the training is delivered (flexibly, with support from tutors and on-the-job learning)
2. Share the benefits to the organisation
Employers benefit too! Apprenticeships help:
  • Build staff confidence and capability
  • Fill skills gaps and develop future leaders
  • Improve staff retention and job satisfaction
  • Access government funding to support development
3. Let us support the process
We’re here to help your employer understand what’s involved and how it works. We can speak to them directly, help with the paperwork, and provide all the information they need to get started.

Suggested Conversation Starter

“I’ve been looking at an apprenticeship through Sport Structures that fits really well with my role. It would help me build new skills and take on more responsibility, and it’s fully funded through the Apprenticeship Levy. They offer support to both me and the organisation, and I’d love to explore whether we could make it work here.”
