Become qualified to tutor and assess in sport

The 1st4sport Level 3 Award for Tutors and Assessors in Sport prepares you for both tutoring and assessing roles across regulated and non-regulated sports courses and workshops.

You will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to support learners effectively and understand the theory and practical application of tutoring and assessment.

Learning takes place through live virtual classroom sessions with an experienced tutor and assessor, followed by assessment activity completed away from the taught sessions.

How the course works

Learn, apply and demonstrate

The qualification combines tutor-led virtual classroom learning with assessment activity that allows you to apply what you have learned.

Take part in two days of interactive online learning with an experienced tutor and assessor.

Complete tutoring activities, planning and assessment activity away from the virtual classroom.

Build your portfolio
Bring together the evidence needed to demonstrate your understanding and practical application.

Achieve your qualification
Once all assessment requirements have been completed successfully, your qualification can be certificated.
Before you book

Learner entry requirements

Learners registering for the qualification must meet the following requirements.
Be at least 18 years of age
Be appropriately identified
Be able to communicate effectively in English
Hold an appropriate vocational sports qualification
Vocational qualification requirement
You must hold a relevant vocational sports qualification in the subject area or sport you aspire to tutor and assess, at least at the same level as the learning you intend to support.
Access to a mentor is strongly recommended
This could be an experienced tutor or assessor in your own environment or a peer who is completing the same qualification and can support your development.

The course is interactive, so you will need suitable equipment and a reliable internet connection to take part.

A smartphone can be used, although functionality may be limited.
Assessment

Build a portfolio of evidence

You will produce a portfolio away from the course that demonstrates your understanding and application of tutoring and assessment.

Registration period
Up to three years
You have three years from the course start date to achieve certification. We recommend aiming to finish around six months before your registration period ends so there is sufficient time for assessment and any amendments.
What comes next?

Continue developing your educator skills

Successful learners may progress to further education and training qualifications. The knowledge and skills developed can also support progression into other roles and qualifications involving delivery, assessment and quality assurance within sport, physical activity, activity leadership, supporting PE and sports development.
