We work in partnership with Basketball England to deliver the Community Coach Award in respond to course requests from those wishing to host a course. We’ve supported a wide range of organisations in hosting these courses, helping to make them more accessible and relevant to their learners.

Course description
This award equips learners with the skills and knowledge required to deliver high-quality basketball experiences in non-competitive environments. Throughout the course, learners will develop the ability to:
- Teach and develop individual basketball fundamentals
- Apply and understand basic team strategies
- Use a variety of game formats to support learning
- Take responsibility for their role as a coach
- Create safe, positive, and inclusive coaching environments
- Plan, deliver, and reflect on coaching sessions to improve their practice
- Coach in a way that meets the needs of all participants
Who is the course for?
This award is suitable for individuals who want to coach independently in non-competitive settings. Potential learners may include:
- Community coaches running short-term or one-off club sessions
- Teachers delivering basketball in school environments
- Multi-sport coaches incorporating basketball into wider programmes
- Youth workers or activity leaders using basketball in informal settings
- Volunteers supporting local or grassroots basketball initiatives
- Individuals new to coaching who want to build confidence and foundational coaching skills
- Students who are developing their coaching skills as part of their studies
Eligibility
Learners must be over the age of 18 to coach independently. If learners are 17, they may enrol but they will only be able to coach as part of a larger coaching team once qualified. They will not be able to coach independently until they reach 18 years of age.
Learners must also:
- Have experience delivering some basketball coaching sessions
- Be a qualified teacher, an independent coach in another sport, or have completed the Introduction to Coaching Basketball award
- Be able to communicate effectively in English
- Have a basic understanding of basketball rules and regulations
Safeguarding requirement: Learners must hold a valid safeguarding certificate prior to certification. This is not included in the course fee and must be arranged separately. Accepted safeguarding training includes courses provided by Basketball England, the Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU), and UK Coaching.
What is the format/duration of the course?
This course is delivered through a blended learning approach. This includes;
- One classroom-based learning session, which can be delivered virtually or face to face, depending on the course organiser’s preference
- Completion of 5 e-learning modules
- Attendance at one face-to-face practical day with an approved Basketball England tutor at a regional venue

It is strongly recommended that learners complete e-learning modules 1-4 before attending the practical day. Module 5 is to be completed prior to the final coaching assessment.
Assessment
To successfully achieve this award, learners will need to complete:
- All e-learning modules
- Attend the virtual classroom session
- Participate in the face-to-face practical day
- Submit a short portfolio to evidence their coaching practice
To gain certification, learners must:
- Plan, deliver, and evaluate a minimum of two coaching sessions outside of the course (each lasting at least 30 minutes)
- Provide evidence of their coaching practice through either:
- A submitted video of one session for remote assessment, or
- A face-to-face assessment, where a Basketball England assessor observes the learner coaching (in their own environment or a simulated environment).
What are the minimum/maximum numbers to run a course?
There is no strict minimum number of learners required. However, we recommend a minimum of 8 learners and a maximum of 20 learners per course delivered by an approved Basketball England tutor.
What facilities are required?
To ensure a positive learning environment, any venue used must:
- Comply with recognised health and safety standards
- Have appropriate access arrangements
- Be conducive to learning (e.g., suitable lighting, temperature, and noise levels)
- Provide access to a sports hall with at least two baskets
For any virtual classroom sessions, an accessible and secure platform must be used, such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom.
What are the fees for organising a course?
The standard learner fee is £73 per person. Basketball England Members may use their 10% discount code, course organisers must apply this discount when a valid code is provided and factor it into their costings.
The learner fee includes:
- Access to the Basketball England platforms and resources
- Basketball England communication templates for use by course organisers
- Updates confirming learner progress via the online platform
- Learner certification
Please note: The learner fee does not include tutor fees (£30 per hour for the virtual classroom, £210 for the practical day), assessor fees (£50 per assessment if assessing the learner individually), travel expenses (40p per mile), or venue hire costs.
