Sport Structures works in partnership with Basketball England to deliver approved Basketball England Community Coach Award Courses that are accessible to the general public on demand.

Course description
This award gives you the skills and knowledge to deliver great basketball experiences outside of a competitive environment. You’ll learn how to:
- Develop individual basketball fundamentals
- Understand basic team strategies
- Use different formats of the game
- Take ownership of your responsibilities as a coach
- Create safe and positive environments
- Plan, deliver and reflect on sessions to improve your coaching practice
- Coach inclusively
Who is the course for?
This award is for you if you want to coach independently in non-competitive settings. You might be:
- A community coach running short-term or one-off sessions in a club environment
- A teacher delivering basketball sessions in a school
- A multi-sport coach including basketball as part of a wider coaching offer
- A youth worker or activity leader using basketball to engage young people in informal settings
- A volunteer supporting local initiatives or grassroots programmes
- Someone new to coaching or not yet qualified, who wants to build their confidence and skills
- A student developing your coaching skills as part of your studies

Learner eligibility
You must be over the age of 18 to coach independently. If you are 17, you may enrol but you will only be able to coach as part of a larger coaching team once qualified. You will not be able to coach independently until you reach 18 years of age.
You must also:
- Have experience delivering some basketball coaching sessions
- Be a qualified teacher, an independent coach in another sport, or have completed the Introduction to Coaching Basketball award
- Be able to communicate effectively in English
- Have a basic understanding of basketball rules and regulations
Prior to certification, learners are required to hold a safeguarding certificate. This is excluded from the course cost. Accepted safeguarding training includes courses provided by Basketball England, the Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU), and UK Coaching.
Format / duration of the course
This course is delivered through a blended learning approach. This involves:
- Attendance at 1 x virtual classroom session
- Completion of 5 x e-learning modules
- Attendance at 1 x face to face practical day with an approved Basketball England tutor at a regional venue

Course expectations:
- You will be expected to complete e-learning modules 1–4 before attending the practical day. This ensures you’re fully prepared to get the most out of the in-person experience.
- Video assessment submission is strongly recommended within four months of attending virtual classroom 1, to help you stay on track and complete the award in a timely manner.
Assessment
To successfully achieve this award, you’ll need to complete:
- All e-learning modules
- Attend the virtual classroom session
- Participate in the face-to-face practical day
- Submit a short portfolio to evidence your coaching practice
To gain certification, you must:
- Plan, deliver, and evaluate a minimum of two coaching sessions outside of the course (each lasting at least 30 minutes)
- Provide evidence of your coaching through one of the following assessment options:
- Submit a video of one session for remote assessment, or
- Request a face-to-face assessment, where a Basketball England assessor observes you coaching in your own environment (this option incurs an additional cost)
Progression opportunities
After achieving this award, you may wish to progress to the Club Coach Award which is specifically for coaches operating in a club environment and have responsibility of coaching a team in local, regional, or national competitions.
Learner Registration
Once registered, you’ll have up to 24 months to complete all components of the award. However, it’s strongly recommended that you follow the course timelines and deadlines set at the start of the course. This helps ensure you stay on track, apply your learning effectively in practice, and complete the course in a timely manner.

Course Fees
The cost of the course is £210 per person for Basketball England Licenced Members, or £240 per person for non-members.

If you're coaching a team and delivering sessions within a club setting, the Club Coach Award is the most suitable option. It’s designed for coaches who are actively involved in structured basketball club environments, focusing on team development and club-based coaching practice.
If your coaching extends beyond the club - such as delivering outreach programmes in the community, running sessions in schools, or supporting wider participation initiatives, then the Community Coach Award is the better fit.
