Apprenticeships

This apprenticeship equips learners with the skills, knowledge, and behaviours required to deliver high-quality personal training services, motivate clients toward health and fitness goals, manage their business operations, and ensure safe and effective practices. Learners will gain experience in programme design, coaching, and client management, with an emphasis on holistic wellbeing.

Primary roles of a Personal Trainer Apprentice:

  • Coach clients (one-to-one and small groups) toward health, fitness, and lifestyle goals.
  • Design and deliver creative, individualized exercise programmes.
  • Provide nutrition advice and lifestyle coaching within scope, and refer to specialists when needed.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and adapt programmes to maximize client progress.
  • Manage business aspects: client acquisition, retention, sales, marketing, finance, and administrative systems.
  • Work professionally, ethically, and in compliance with health, safety, data protection, and industry regulations.

Delivery Outline:

Training is delivered through a blend of on-the-job coaching, formal taught sessions, and remote/online learning modules. Apprentices receive structured support and resources, and may also receive Functional Skills training in English, Maths, or Digital if required.

Contract Requirements and Training Costs

  • An apprentice is ideally contracted to at least 30 hours per week to ensure no extended duration is needed
  • An apprentice’s contract of employment must cover the length of the apprenticeship
  • A minimum of 6 hours a week of an apprentice’s contracted time must be allocated to ‘off-the-job’ training
  • An apprentice must be paid at least the minimum apprenticeship wage in their first year of learning
  • Apprentices aged 19+ must be paid at least the minimum wage for their age group in their second year of learning
  • Depending on company size and apprentice age, a contribution to training costs may be required
  • Dependent on the apprentice’s age and wage, contributions to a workplace pension and employer national insurance contributions may be required
