Leisure Team Member Apprenticeship Standard
This apprenticeship provides learners with the skills, knowledge and behaviours to support, enhance and deliver day-to-day operations and services of a leisure or fitness facility. Apprentices will gain experience as lifeguards, swimming teachers, gym instructors and group activity leaders, often performing many of these duties within a single shift.
Primary roles of a Leisure Team Member apprentice:
- Open or close the facility; welcome customers; answer queries and handle straightforward complaints.
- Deliver gym inductions, run group sessions, teach swimming lessons, and prepare sports areas.
- Maintain accurate records and promote activities using the facility’s IT systems.
- Ensure safe, inclusive working environment in line with health & safety, safeguarding and equalities legislation
Delivery Outline:
Training is delivered by qualified tutors at the workplace or suitable venues, complemented by remote learning sessions where required. Learners are supported through structured resources, e-learning modules, and practical on-the-job coaching. Functional Skills in English and Maths (Level 1 or 2) are provided if needed.

Contract Requirements and Training Costs
- An apprentice is ideally contracted to at least 30 hours per week to ensure no extended duration is needed
- An apprentice’s contract of employment must cover the length of the apprenticeship
- A minimum of 6 hours a week of an apprentice’s contracted time must be allocated to ‘off-the-job’ training
- An apprentice must be paid at least the minimum apprenticeship wage in their first year of learning
- Apprentices aged 19+ must be paid at least the minimum wage for their age group in their second year of learning
- Dependent on company size and apprentice age a contribution to training costs may be required
- Dependent on the apprentice’s age and wage, contributions to a workplace pension and employer national insurance contributions may be required
