Celebrating National Volunteers' Week: The People Behind the Positive Impact
Last week was National Volunteers' Week, which provided an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the incredible people who give their time, energy, and passion to support sport and physical activity across the country.
Behind every successful club, competition, training session, and community programme are volunteers making a difference. Whether they're coaching young people, helping events run smoothly, or supporting the day-to-day operations of a club, their contributions create opportunities for others to learn, grow, and thrive.
At Sport Structures, many of our team members have experienced the impact of volunteering first-hand. To round off our celebrations, we're sharing some of their stories and reflections on how volunteering has shaped their lives and careers.
Finding a Career Through Volunteering
For Iman, volunteering was the first step towards a career in sport.
"Volunteering played a huge role in helping me find my career path. It gave me the opportunity to build confidence, develop coaching skills, and learn from experienced mentors. Those early experiences showed me the positive impact sport can have and continue to influence the work I do today."
Like many people working in sport, volunteering provided valuable opportunities to gain experience, develop new skills, and build meaningful connections. What started as giving time to support others became a foundation for future professional development and a lasting passion for making a difference through sport.
Creating Positive Experiences Through Coaching
For Kath, volunteering as a junior hockey coach has been one of the most rewarding experiences of her life.
"As part of Volunteers' Week, I've been reflecting on how rewarding it is to give time back through sport. For me, that's been through coaching junior hockey and it continues to be one of the most positive and inspiring experiences I've had."
While coaching often focuses on developing sporting ability, Kath believes the greatest impact happens beyond the scoreboard.
"Working with young players is about so much more than developing technical skills. Of course, you see their abilities develop on the pitch, but what stands out even more is everything that happens alongside that. You see confidence build, friendships develop, and players begin to find their voice. Players start to show leadership, support one another, and develop resilience in the face of challenge."
Every young person brings their own unique experiences, motivations, and aspirations.
"What I've learned is that every young person arrives with their own story, their own motivations, and their own path ahead. No two journeys look the same and that's exactly how it should be. As a coach, it's about creating an environment where everyone feels they belong, can have fun, where difference is recognised and valued, and where each individual can experience success in a way that is meaningful to them."
Although time commitments may change over the years, the lessons volunteering teaches often stay with us.
"Although my time is more limited these days, these experiences have really shaped me individually and in the way I value development beyond just performance."
The Volunteers Behind Every Event
For Colin, volunteering in archery highlighted just how much work takes place behind the scenes to make sport happen.
"I did quite a lot of volunteering when I was involved in archery, and it really showed me how important volunteers are in sport."
His volunteering experiences ranged from supporting major competitions to helping his local club operate throughout the year.
"I helped at events such as the National Series Finals, where I supported with setting up the field and collecting arrows during the day to help the event run smoothly. I also volunteered a lot within my club, helping set up competitions throughout the year so the club could continue running events."
Volunteering also provided opportunities to contribute to decision-making and governance through committee roles.
"Alongside this, I was involved with both county and club committees. It was a great experience and gave me a real appreciation for all the work volunteers do behind the scenes."
Thank You to Every Volunteer
The experiences shared by our team reflect just a small part of the impact volunteers have across sport and physical activity. Volunteers help create welcoming environments, inspire future generations, support participation opportunities, and ensure clubs and events can continue to thrive.
We would like to thank every volunteer who gives their time to support others. Your contribution matters, your impact is felt far beyond what you may see, and sport would not be possible without you.
Whether you're coaching, officiating, organising events, serving on committees, or supporting your local club in any way, thank you for everything you do.
