CPSU Time to Listen Workshop
CPSU Time to Listen Workshop

Host the CPSU Time to Listen workshop for your club or network — a 3-hour, tutor-led safeguarding course designed for Club Welfare Officers. Flexible online or face-to-face delivery, tailored to your sport, with group booking options for 12–20 participants

Time to Listen is an interactive workshop developed by the NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU). At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify what a club welfare officer does
  • Describe how a club welfare officer works with others to create a child centered environment
  • Explain how the club welfare officer role fits into the wider safeguarding environment
  • Apply learning to case studies including sharing good safeguarding practice

What organisers gain:

  • Confidence your CWOs receive consistent, high-quality training
  • Flexible delivery to suit your geography and schedules
  • Consolidated reporting and attendance records for compliance
  • Options to tailor examples to your sport or context
  • Clubs: Appointing new Welfare Officers or refreshing training every three years.
  • National Governing Bodies: Standardise safeguarding practice across your sport.
  • Active Partnerships & Education: Support local networks of clubs, schools, and community providers.

Prerequisites:
Learners must be 18+ and able to communicate effectively in English. It’s strongly recommended they complete an approved basic safeguarding course beforehand (e.g., Safeguarding & Protecting Children) and check governing body guidance on accepted versions.

The Time to Listen workshop will help you carry out your safeguarding role and responsibilities to young people. The workshop will provide the opportunity to discuss a range of topics in a friendly, open and informal environment, as well as providing an opportunity to learn from other Club Welfare Officers.

Learners will receive a copy of a Time to Listen Workbook resource.

Learners must be a minimum of least 18 years of age and be able to communicate effectively in English. It is highly recommended that attendees complete UK Coaching's Safeguarding and Protecting Children Workshop before attending this workshop. In addition, please ensure that your National Governing Body accepts the multi-sport version of the Time to Listen course before booking.

Informal ongoing assessment will take place throughout the workshop. Certification is valid for 3 years.

This is an online workshop delivered virtually over a three hour period.

CPSU would recommend completing refresher webinars every 1-2 years to remain up to date.

To offer ongoing support to club welfare officers, Sport Structures run the Communities of Practice Workshop to keep welfare officers up-to-date and provide an environment to share best practice and gain advice and support.

This process is available to determine demand. Further workshops will be organised if demand exists so we would strongly recommend that you register your interest. click here to register your interest in a future course
